The Things We Did This Summer

Sun, fun and memories. For the Western hemisphere, Autumn officially started on September 23rd,2010. But, there are still remnants of summer around. Gardens are still in bloom, the leaves are just starting to change. Some still dare to wear summer outfits. Do not forget the barbeque- a favorite summer social media. The sports fishermen still enjoy their favorite sport and so do golfers.

There are summer memories to rehash on those cold winter gatherings. The young ones have lots to talk about too. There is summer camp, visit to family or friends, or a new skill learned, like fishing, swimming or even gardening. There are trips to the zoo, to the circus, nature walks and more. There is also the joy of being allowed to stay up a little later to watch TV or surf the net. There are new friends, with technology, they can stay connected no matter how far apart they are. The first few days of school is surely filled with chatter about all the summer activities.

Some find summer love. This reminds me of the September Song of years gone by. Society today are mobile in every way - wheels, technology and social networking bridge the gap of distance. Summer flings and affairs do make the summer interesting. It adds color to summer memories. There are those who are able to find this affair blossom into something more lasting.

It is not all about happy times. Sickness and death do not choose the time nor season to come calling. It is painful to see a loved one confined to a bed, at the hospital or at home. The reality of a final farewell is daunting. These are the facts of Life. Summer makes it easier for family and friends to travel the distance at times like this. The summer breeze, the summer blooms and foliage does provide some comfort to a grieving heart. It is a reminder that there is Life after Death.

There is renewal of everything if we let it happen. Seasons come and seasons go and so does Life. Sadness and pain visit us in many ways, but like a devastating summer or winter storm, it comes to pass. The burden of recovery follows, hopefully, it too, shall be resolved. Sometimes it takes so much longer and it is a struggle to live each day with the pain of loss, especially the loss of someone you love.

Summer is a great time for social activities. Family and friends gather around the grill. There is something about the smell of barbeque that stimulates not just the appetite but but also incites a happy mood. Entertaining is easier with the barbeque on, less fuss, less mess.

Fishing is a favorite sport of some of my friends. There is nothing like catching that big fish and get to show it off. Fishing stories are amazing, some fishes get bigger as the story circulates. Summer is a time for outdoor living. Gardeners are in their glory, taking endless photos of their garden.

Summer is indeed over, but the things we did will brighten those dreary winter nights as we look at the summer photos. Till next summer.
