What plans have you made for your kids for the summer? If you would like for them to have some structure in their days then enroll them in Vacation Bible School or summer day camps in your area.
Aquariums often have summer discovery camps. The one in North Carolina at Ft. Fisher has a summer program for those children 5 and up. This aquarium is located right on the beach and the program includes time outside on the seashore studying different fish, crab and shells as well as inside the aquarium studying the fish and mammals there.
Cities often have children's programs in the summer. These are summer programs planned within the parks and recreation department. They often include arts and crafts programs, nature walks and studies, and exercise programs.
Check with the area YMCA to find out about their summer programs. Children can learn to swim and take lifesaving courses as well as make a lot of new friends.
Private schools often offer summer camp programs Monday through Friday during regular school hours. Montessori schools offer very interesting summer programs for children age 2 thought 12.
If you decide not to send your child to any sort of summer program there are many things that you can do with that child.
A day trip to a water park is always a good way to spend a summer day with your child. I suggest you call the mother of one of your child's friends to accompany you. The kids will interact with other kids and you and the other mother can have a little "me" time (with one eye on the kids, of course).
If you live near the beach, a day trip to the seashore is always fun. If there are carnival type rides you can entertain your child for hours riding them. Otherwise, stake out your spot on the beach and prepare to ride the waves. You can rent swim mats or surf riders at a local stand. Walk on the fishing pier or drop your own hook over the railing and see what you can catch. Top off the day with a good seafood dinner.
You can also go to the beach to fly a kite in the ocean side breeze; feed the seagulls at the river side park or on the beach strand.
Maybe your child can learn a new sport in the summer or take dancing lessons or gymnastics. Take your child bowling for a day or to the park to play on the slides and swings.
Maybe you can get a family member or friend to take you and your child out for a day fishing or just for a boat ride.
You and your child can go on a bike ride along the park or riding trail. Take your child to an area equestrienne ranch and let him/her take riding lessons and learn all about horses.
You can teach your child how to cook or bake. Your child can create a garden with your help. If you have a pool in your yard, you and your child can spend your afternoons there. Invite some friends and their mothers to join you.
If your town has a skating rink, take your child to learn how to skate(roller or ice) and then you can have skating afternoons during the summer break.
Your local public library will have summer reading programs for you and your child to join.
Check out a language course for the summer and attend with your child. Maybe you can go to a computer course together if the child is old enough.
There are many things you and your child can do together this summer. Have fun.
